strong; as subst. 'authority, power (over), oppression' ní dhearna sé trén le teangaidh, 'he has not insulted with his tongue' or 'he has not committed deeds of prowess (merely) with his tongue.' The poet possible had both meanings in mind; for the latter idea cf. beag a mhaoidheamh, mór a ghníomh, 262.  [athrén ar, concerning his power over, 1229.
